Homeownership Program Application
Dear Applicant,
Please review ALL of this information before moving on with your online application - We recommend that you fill out the online application using a computer if at all possible, as sometimes the phone cuts off important sections of the application.
Also - make sure that you complete ALL TABS of the application... like clicking on "Co-Applicant" if you have a spouse or another person you're applying for the mortgage with, or "Dependents" to enter all other household members (make sure to enter their gender as well), or "military service" if you have served our country. Other commonly missed sections are the "co-applicant's employment" tab and the "Monthly Expenses" tab.
Thank you for your interest in the Lake Agassiz Habitat for Humanity (LAHFH) Homeownership Program. We believe that everyone should have a safe, affordable place to call home and we assist consumers by offering a hand-up, and not a hand-out. Our application process is multi-step and involves helping prospective individuals prepare for the various responsibilities of homeownership, including learning about personal finances, mortgages, maintenance, and upkeep of homes, and more. Our application collects information that will allow us to determine your qualification based on our three criteria; Need, Willingness to Partner and Ability to Pay, each are further defined below.
Need is evaluated based on total household income which must be within the range listed below, and your need for better housing. Current residence that is temporary, over-crowded, more than 30% of your income goes to rent, or inadequate such as problems with the structure; electrical or sewage service systems are examples of need for better housing.

Willingness to Partner requires approved applicants to complete 300-550 sweat equity hours for the household, depending on the number of adults. These hours will be spent taking classes on financial education, preparing, and maintaining a budget, and assisting in the construction of all HFH homes including the one that will be assigned to you. In preparation for maintenance and basic repairs of the house you will purchase, classes on home maintenance are also required.
Ability to Pay will be evaluated based on income and debts to determine that the affordable mortgage can be paid each month along with other obligations such as childcare and utilities.
Other required documents MUST be submitted to accompany your online Homeownership application, in order for your application to be considered "complete" and processed by the Family Selection Committee. These documents should be mailed to the following address & post-marked no later than August 31st, 2025:
Lake Agassiz Habitat for Humanity
ATTN: Carissa
PO Box 1022
Moorhead, MN 56561
Listed below are the addition items required (do not submit any original documents):
What happens after I turn in my application?
Once a complete application with all required information is received, Habitat staff and Selection Committee Volunteers will review and verify the information you provided in your application including your bank account balances, income, rental history, credit score, and a background check. A full review will be completed within 30 days of receiving a completed application.
Applicants that meet the initial qualifications will receive a notice letter within 30 days to let you know what the next step is in the family selection process. Denial letters will be mailed to those who do not meet the requirements of the program.
*Please note: Our Family Selection Process is lengthy, and the final qualified families will be brought to the January board meeting for approval. Selected families will be notified at the end of January 2026 and the remaining families will be denied throughout that process or at that time. If you need immediate assistance for housing, Habitat for Humanity may not be the right fit for you. If you are applying for our 2027 homeownership program, the earliest you would likely move into the new home would be Fall/winter of 2027, but this timeline could change.
